Sri Lanka has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. In the last decades, the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party have been the largest parties, by far. The general rule, however, has become coalition politics, since neither SLFP nor UNP are able to gather parliamentary majorities.
